While Nagano is generally a very safe place,some crimes do occur.The majority of these are thefts,so it is wise to take precautions.

How to protect your property

At Hotels:

  • Lock the door when you leave your room.
  • If carrying a large amount of cash,have the front desk put it in their safe,or keep it in the safe in your room if there is one.
  • Always check before opening the door for visitors.

To protect your property outside of the hotel:

  • Always keep valuables(traveler's checks,wallets,etc)out of sight.
  • Keep to busy,well-lighted streets at night.
  • Do not leave valuables in your car.

How to prevent traffic accidents

  • According to Japanese traffic rules,pedestrians should walk on the right side of the street,and automobiles must drive on the left.
  • Please obey the speed limit.
  • Do not park in non-parking areas,because of the likelihood of traffic jams.
  • Watch out for icy roads in winter.
