30,000 years ago | People hunt Naumann elephants around Lake Nojiri. |
12,000 years ago | As the climate warms, the present Japanese archipelago is formed. People make earthen vessels and live by hunting and gathering food. |
5,000 years ago | Large settlements are built around the foot of Mt. Yatsugatake. |
2,300 years ago | Rice cultivation and metal implements are introduced and the Yayoi Culture spreads. |
4th century | Burial mounds including those of Koboyamakofun in Matsumoto City and General Mori in Koshoku City are built. |
665 | Wooden tablets dating from this year have been discovered at historic sites in Yashiro, Koshoku City. |
704 | Shinano becomes the official name of the province and the first provincial of the is made. |
721 | Shinano province is divided, creating Suwa province. The two provinces merge again ten years later. |
938 | Taira Masakado fights near Shinano Kokubunji. |
1180 | Kiso Yoshinaka (Minamoto) raises an army in cooperation with Minamoto Yoritomo. |
1279 | Ippen, a holy priest, visits Zenkoji Temple by way of Saku Tomonosho. |
1333 | The Kamakura Shogunate falls. Hojo Kamejyumaru (Tokiyuki) flees to Suwa in an attempt to re-establish his rule. |
1400 | Protector Ogasawara Nagahide is defeated in the battle of Daito by powerful clans from the northern Shinano regions. |
1561 | Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen fight at Kawanaka-jima for the fourth time. |
1592 | Ishikawa Kazumasa and his son start to build Matsumoto Castle around this time. |
1600 | Tokugawa Hidetaka's army attacks Sanada at Ueda Castle on his way to the battle of Sekigahara. |
1761 | Peasants under the rule of the Lord of Ueda stage a massive revolt (the Horeki uprising.) |
1864 | Sakuma Zozan, a Matsushiro clansman, is assassinated in Kyoto. |
1876 | Chikuma and Nagano merge to form Nagano Prefecture. |
1919 | Liberal education movements flourish around this time. |
1945 | The Second World War ends and post-war reform begins. |
1947 | The Japanese Constitution is implemented. |
1963 | The Matsumoto and Suwa regions are designated as new industrial areas. |
1991 | Nagano is chosen as the host city for the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. |
