About Nagano Prefecture

Land/Nature
Located in the geographic center of Japan, and surrounded by majestic mountains soaring some 3000 meters high, Nagano Prefecture is nicknamed the “roof of Japan.”
The seasonal variations of Nagano’s exquisite nature, together with its rich cultural heritage, have brought our prefecture close to the hearts of the many visitors we receive each year.
The prefecture stretches 120km from east to west, 212km from north to south, and is 13,562 square kilometers in area, making it the forth largest in Japan.

As of October 1, 2008, per-capita income in Nagano Prefecture was JPY 2.717 million, found by dividing total prefectural earnings (JPY 5,897.6 billion) by the total population (2,170,691.) It was a 5.2 % decrease from the previous year and was 98.7% of the national per-capita income of JPY 2.754 million.

Gross Prefectural Product

The fiscal 2008 gross domestic product of Nagano Prefecture decreased from the previous year by 3.6% to JPY 8,034.6 billion in nominal terms, and by 1.7% to JPY 9.800.0 billion in real terms.

Primary industry saw a nominal value decrease of 3.0 % from the previous year to JPY 157.3 billion.

Secondary industry decreased by 7.7 % from the previous year to JPY 2,454.4 billion. This is because the manufacturing, construction and mining industries declined by 8.0%, 6.5% and 1.0% respectively.

The gross product in tertiary industry also decreased by 2.2% from the previous year to JPY 5,700.5 billion due to declines in the real estate industry (5.9%) and the finance and insurance industry (13.0%).

 

Health/Medical Care
Average life expectancy of males is 79.84 years, the highest in Japan, with an average of 86.48 years for females, the 5th highest in Japan (2007).
Annual per-capita medical expenses for the aged in (2007) were ¥715,564, the lowest nationwide.

 

Education
The number of high school graduates who advanced to universities in March 2009 was 9,802, showing a percentage of 50.8% (26th throughout Japan with the average, 53.9%). This was an increase of 0.1 point from the previous year.

 

Tourism
Japan, situated on the pacific rim of volcanic regions, has numerous hot springs, of which 231 are located in Nagano Prefecture (2nd in Japan as of March 2009), drawing many vacationers each year.
During 2008, the number of people visiting tourist destinations in Nagano Prefecture was 86.75 million, spending a total of ¥321.7 billion.
